Once a symbol of power and status, the caftan has returned today to grace our events and celebrations as an emblem of joy and happiness. With its unique appearance and luxurious form, it tells stories of heritage, civilization, and culture that have not faded with time. The emergence of the traditional Moroccan outfit known as the caftan dates back to the 12th century when the Almohads sought attire that would reflect the grandeur and majesty of the sultan. The caftan fulfilled this role and was initially a symbol of strength and status for men, characterized by its black color, short sleeves, and inclusion of a hood, unlike the caftan we see today.

In the 15th century, the caftan underwent a significant transformation, shifting from men’s attire to women’s, though its role remained unchanged. It was reserved for women of the elite and ruling class, unlike the general popularity it enjoys today. Its story began at that time, with its prestige and reputation spreading across the land, reaching all social strata. Today, every city boasts its unique caftan design, each reflecting a historical saga that has endured for hundreds or even thousands of years.

The traditional Moroccan outfit, the Moroccan caftan, has reigned supreme in both authenticity and modernity, undisturbed by even the most prestigious global brands due to its exceptional quality in every aspect, both material and symbolic. It maintains traditions and customs, such as its presentation with the bridal trousseau during the Wattasid era, a practice still cherished by Moroccans today.

The caftan enjoys a strong presence in contemporary events and celebrations. Is this due to tradition, or is it the captivating look that has captured people’s hearts? In truth, we cannot definitively answer this question. Why? Because we lack precise knowledge and sufficient information to make a definitive judgment. We do not know the exact circumstances of its spread or the true romantic story behind the emergence of this elegant garment. What we have are merely perceptions and a few stories. This mystery adds to the caftan’s beauty and grandeur. The important thing is not just the design and appearance, but the story, the narrative hidden within its folds. Gold is not sold at high prices because it is rare or because its designs are eye-catching, but because it hides a story—a story that began and ended but left an enduring impact on all who heard it.
